Olive "Ollie" Webster McGhar

Olive Webster “Ollie” McGhar of Notasulga passed away Friday, October 4, 2019, at Bethany House in Auburn, at the age of 90.  She was born April 11, 1929, to the late James Arthur and Maude Hornsby Webster.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her by her husband of 56 years Robert Olin “Bob” McGhar, her beloved daughter-in-law Rosemary, her brother James Perry Webster, and her sisters Verna Coker, Mary Hilda Bonner, and Gertrude Clark.  She is survived by her three children Jimmy McGhar of Notasulga, Sam (Sandra) McGhar of Montgomery, and Nancy (Phillip) Collier of Columbus, Georgia; grandchildren Buck (Karen) McGhar, Randa (Robert) Hammock, Meredith (Matthew) Marshall, Kim (Chris) Chavis, Corinne (Jeremy) Nabors and Callie (Dan) Cummins; and sixteen great grandchildren, all of whom she dearly loved.

She spent her married life as a helpmate to her husband in managing their farm and feed and seed/warehouse operations, and in later years working for Walmart in Tallassee.  She developed a reputation for being an exceptional cook and feeding anyone who happened to be there at mealtime.  Many of the salesmen who called on them quickly learned to time their visits at lunchtime to experience one of her massive Southern spreads.  She was known to feed the entire football team from the high school with little advance notice, and there was always one or two of her son’s friends who just happened to stop by at dinner time.  Anyone was always welcome at her table.  She took great pleasure in growing anything, whether a vegetable garden or her beloved African violets, and loved caring for the numerous hummingbirds she was able to attract every year.  She had a great love for all God’s creatures, including her German Shepherd, Cocoa.

Visitation will be at her home at 7887 AL Highway 199 in Notasulga on Sunday, October 6, 2019, from 2:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M.  Services will be at Woodland Presbyterian Church, AL Highway 199, on Monday, October 7, 2019, at 10:00 A.M. with burial in the church cemetery.  Mrs. McGhar will lie in state prior to the funeral beginning at 9:00 A.M.  In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to Bethany House, 1171 Gatewood Drive, Building 100, Auburn, AL  36830, or to Woodland Presbyterian Church, c/o John Eidsmoe 2648 Pine Acres, Pike Road, AL 36064.
