John Roger Hornsby, 77, of Franklin, Alabama, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on June 3rd, 2024. Roger was born on April 27th, 1947, in Tallassee, AL. Roger grew up in Franklin, AL, where he has lived for the past 31 years with his beloved wife Linda. Roger was the oldest child of 7 children born to James Huston Hornsby and Marjorie McEune Hornsby. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Susan Hornsby, and brothers Patrick Hornsby and Nigel Hornsby. He has left behind his loving wife Linda Galt-Hornsby; son John Hornsby (Kathryn); daughter Rebecca Beckman (Paul); son Joshua Hornsby (Elizabeth); and 9 grandchildren Sarah and Lauren (John), Isabella, Brody and Brooks (Rebecca), Sully, Levi, Stella and Cody (Joshua). He is also survived by his siblings Mike Hornsby (Paula), Steve Hornsby (Noreen), and Sheila Godfrey (Tommy); numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and brothers- and sisters-in-law; and his mother-in-law Mary Elizabeth Galt. Roger graduated from Macon Academy in 1965, and began working for the US Dept of Agriculture as a cotton scout and then full time for them under National Resource Conservation Service until retiring in 2012. He was well known and respected throughout Macon County and all of Southeast Alabama through his job with USDA. Roger also farmed row crops full time. Roger enjoyed spending time with his family and loved all of his animals, pets and strays alike. Roger would feed any stray that showed up at the house or the store and they would quickly become family. After retirement, he especially loved working with Linda at their nursery, Linda’s Greenhouse Lake Martin. Those that knew him know that he never met a stranger and had the ability to tell the best stories and make everyone smile around him. His warm personality was known to all who met and loved him. His family always says that he missed his true career calling which would have been Meteorology. He loved tracking the weather constantly and watching the Weather Channel. His family even called him Super Doppler. He loved Little Debbie cakes and could always be seen with a half full white coffee cup preferably brewed in a percolator. He also enjoyed baking and made the best oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Roger will be dearly missed and will forever be loved by his family and friends and his legacy will continue forever through his family.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 6, 2024, from 5:00-7:00 pm at John’s home at 688 Bar H Ranch Rd., Auburn, AL, 36830. Graveside services will be Friday, June 7, 2024, at 11:00 am at Ramsay Memorial Presbyterian Cemetery.
