Harmon Lamar Adkison Obituary

Harmon Lamar Adkison, known to folks as Lamar or Unca Mar or just Mar, left this earth on Monday, June 9, 2025, to be with the Lord.  He leaves behind a nephew Russell (Addie) Adkison and grandniece Cassie, along with relatives in south Alabama, Mississippi and Texas.  He was a loving son to his mother Thelma and father Harmon and cared selflessly for both in sickness and in health.  He gave that same love to his brother Gordon and Gordon’s family until his last day on this earth.  He touched so many people both in and outside his family and community.

He lived an often-times tough country life to reap the seeds he planted in life.  He enjoyed seeing the happiness his generosity created and truly just wanted to help his family and friends be happier in life.  From the 40’s-50’s as a Notasulga Blue Devil student, through enlistment in the Alabama National Guard and later as a long-time employee (later retired) of the Ampex Tape Corporation in Opelika, he kept a full schedule, pitching in at home in an increasing role through the years, while still taking time to enjoy the outdoors both as a sportsman and a cattleman/farmer.  This part-time full-time job completed him as he improved the health and size of his herd with his father Harmon until it had grown to well over 200 head.  Upon retirement, he made the cattle business his full-time post-retirement job, never leaving his herd without their leader.  He did the same for his friends and family, always being there when they needed him most.  Like the expert bowler he was, he always rolled a strike when he knew he was needed.  He was a quiet man in life with a sharp dry humor he shared when you understood that side of him.  After experiencing his daily quietness, the eternal silence of his departure will leave many with a void for the rest of their lives.  He will forever be loved and missed.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Antioch United Methodist Church at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the funeral beginning at 12:00 pm.

Rest in Peace, Lamar, may you receive the slumber your vigilance to all life around you truly deserves and may we meet again one sunny day.
