Donald Theodore Johnson, 89, passed away peacefully at Bethany House on December 17. He was active in the ministry 71 years and married to his loving wife Mary Alice over 67 years.
Don was born in Citronelle, Alabama, December 4, 1935. He was a graduate of Howard College (Samford University) and also received Masters of Divinity and Religious Education degrees from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. In addition to his 27 years as Director of Missions for the Tuskegee Lee Baptist Association, he served as pastor of churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Don was also very active in the Alabama Baptist State Convention where he served for 6 years as the secretary/treasurer of the Alabama Directors of Missions. In addition to his work with churches, he worked in other capacities throughout his life. At various times he was also a farmer, a grocery store owner, a law firm courier and a driver for local auto dealerships. But he will always be best remembered for his dedication to God, His work, and his family.
Don is survived by his wife and their children Lisa Johnson Brannon (David) and Jim Johnson (Amy). Other survivors include 4 grandchildren Ashley Brannon Hall (Jeremy), Rob Johnson, Kate Johnson Glen (Jacob) and Ben Johnson, as well as 2 great grandchildren, Eliza and Wilder Hall. He is also survived by 2 of his 9 siblings, Ella Mae Lochner and Jeff Johnson.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Parkway Baptist Church in Auburn, Alabama, on Sunday, December 22. Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. and the service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Crossroads Community Church (Mt. Hebron West Baptist Church) in Elmore, Alabama, at 3:45 p.m.
