Robert Thomas Jones was born on September 8, 1929, in Madison, Georgia and passed away on May 20, 2019, in Tallassee, Alabama, at the age of 89. His parents Robert Lamar Jones and Caroline Catherine Jones only lived in Georgia until Bob was 6 months old when they moved to San Diego, California. There Bob grew to the ripe old age of 17.
On September 16, one week after his 17th birthday, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps which later became the United States Air Force. During his tenure in the Air Force, he served in many American states as well as in Korea, Japan, Greenland, Thailand, Vietnam, and Guam. For his service, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal (both Army and Air Force), the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. After serving 20 years and 15 days, he retired from the Air Force on October 1, 1966.
On August 23, 1968, he met his future beloved wife Myrtle. They were wed on November 6, 1971. Myrtle preceded Bob in death on May 10, 2012. On that date, a part of Bob died also. They were so much a part of each other.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, by a step-son Robert Buford "Buddy" Tant in 1999, and a step-daughter Shelea Suzanne Thurston in 2005. Bob is survived by his daughter Linda K. McCollum of Jacksonville, Arkansas, his son Richard A. Jones of Chula Vista, California, his step daughter Linda C. Miller of Tallassee, several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, May 25, 2019, at East Tallassee Church of Christ at 2:30 P.M. with Pastor Mike McElroy officiating. Burial will follow in Carrville Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service at 1:30 P.M. at the church.
