Gene Katherine Langham Douglass, 84, of DeFuniak Springs, FL, died April 20, 2017, at her home after a long battle with Alzheimer ’s disease. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2017, at Davis-Watkins Funeral Home in DeFuniak Springs at 3:00 P.M. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 2:00 to 3:00 P.M. prior to the service. Gene was born in Amarillo, TX, on December 27, 1932, to the late Edward Carlyle and Lillie Parker Langham. She married Charles M. Smith, III, and raised four children in Montgomery. She served for several years as missionaries overseas. She served in Australia with her sons Charlie and Parker, and with her second husband Gillis Douglass in Kenya and Bogota, Colombia. They later settled in Defuniak Springs where they were members of First Presbyterian Church of Niceville, FL. She was preceded in death by her son Charles M. Smith, IV. Surviving are her husband Gillis Douglass; her children Ellen Hughes, Parker Smith, Susan Roberts, Angus Douglass, Laura Hope Douglass, Britton Douglass, and Callie Douglass; her grandchildren Katie (Thomas) Corbitt, Will (Jacqueline) Hughes, Anne Moreland (Derek) Hand, Hollister (Austin) Lott, Sellers Smith, Bud Smith, Carly Smith, Annie (David) Garner, Gracie Smith, Parker Smith, Amelia Douglass, and Brandon Douglass; her great grandchildren Brooke Corbitt, Edward Corbitt, Emily Kate Corbitt, William Hughes, Mary Winsett Hughes, Weldon Hughes, Mary Ellen Hand, and Gates Garner. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Niceville Building Fund or to Emerald Coast Hospice.
