Troy Smith Akin, 88, of Reeltown, died Friday, March 22, 2024, at EAMC. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 11:00 am with Rev. Tim Smith and Rev. Nic Stockdale officiating. Burial will follow in Reeltown Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church prior to the funeral beginning at 10:00 am.
Mr. Akin is survived by his wife of 66 years Jeanette Casaday Akin; his daughter Donna Rivers of Reeltown; his son Chris Akin of Reeltown; his sister Joann Jarrett of Talladega; his granddaughters Ashley Huie Strong and Cassidy Hartley; and his great grandchildren Ava Hartley, Soren Strong, and Kenny Hartley. He was preceded in death by his father O.T. Akin, his mother Avis Nichol Akin, his mother Ina Akin, his son Keith Akin, and his sisters Hilda Young, and Betty Akin.
Mr. Akin served three years in the U.S. Marines. He then worked 30 years for Mount Vernon Mills in Tallassee. He also drove a school bus for Reeltown for 22 years and served as part of the chain gang during football games under coaches Duane Webster and Jackie O’Neal. His favorite hobby was to watch birds at bird feeders he built while sitting on his back porch. He loved to cut grass and walk outside. He also cut grass at First Baptist Church of Reeltown for over 20 years.
